The cult of personality lives on.
Thatcher and Blair and Johnson won because of their personalities; Major and Corbyn lost because of their lack of a personality.
Same applied in the US with Trump and in with Macron.
In Scotland Sturgeon won but whatever the Libdems leaders name was, lost - she like Corbyn has no personality.
Politics is not about policies any more, it is about which leader has the most charisma.
Farage is/was popular with some people (mostly loud beer drinkers) because he was charismatic but not sufficiently so for him to get into Westminster.
